Motorola Droid Pro Gets a Security-Oriented System Software Update

A maintenance update to the system software for the Motorola Droid Pro is now available. This is not an upgrade to Android OS 2.3, but instead makes this business-oriented smartphone more secure.

The new version (3.8.7) adds data encryption for the files stored in internal memory and on a microSD card. This is AES256 encryption with an auto-generated device key.

The new version of the system software for the Droid Pro also includes support for ActiveSync policies controllable by a Microsoft Exchange Server administrator. This callows a remote admin to require the device to be encrypted, set limits on the size of emails received, and other policies.

There are also enhancements to the VPN functionality, as well as other improvements. In addition, a number of bugs have also been fixed in a wide range of areas, from Bluetooth functionality to the mobile hotspot app. A full list of the is available on Motorola's website (PDF).

Update Available Now
The Droid Pro software update can be manually installed by going to Settings > About phone >System updates > Download on the smartphone. This process will take 10 - 20 minutes.

Users also have the option to wait for Verizon to send the update to this smartphone automatically. Users will be notified when their device has received the new system software and given the option to install it. This is being rolled out gradually, and might take several days to arrive.
