Qik Video Connect Brings iPhone and Android Users Together

Despite the schism between iOS and Android that runs rampant on tech sites across the Internet, there really isn’t so much bad blood between the systems out in the real world. People with iPhones and people with Android smartphones interact with each other on a daily basis, and generally manage to coexist peacefully.

Embracing this reality and crossing OS boundaries is video-chat software developer Qik (now a subsidiary of Skype). With a new app for Android devices, and an update to the already existing Qik Video Connect for iPhone, Qik is providing a video-chat application with a wealth of novel and useful features, not the least of which is its ability to connect iPhone and Android users.

Qik Video Connect for Android, a brand new application, will support Android smartphones running versions OS 2.1 (Eclair)  and OS 2.3.3 (Gingerbread). Qik Video Connect for iOS, which is receiving the update to allow Android crossover communication, will be available on the iPhone, iPad 2, and all iPod touches that feature a camera.

In addition to standard video chatting, Qik Video Connect also offers video mail, allowing users to send recorded video messages to friends who aren’t immediately available to vid chat.

Price and Availability
The Android version of Qik Video Connect is currently available for free in the Android market. The iOS version is in the App Store, also for free, but only for a limited time. The app normally costs $3, but Qik is discounting it to $0 through the end of this week.

Video mail is available as a free trial until June 1, at which point sending video messages will still be offered, but with an unspecified monthly charge. Receiving video messages will remain free of charge.
