AT&T Launching HP Veer 4G webOS Smartphone in Two Weeks

AT&T has just made it official: it is going to be the first carrier in the U.S. to offer the HP Veer, the latest smartphone running the webOS. This device will be very small, but still have a physical keyboard and a touchscreen.

The Veer was unveiled in February, and at that time HP said this device will be released in spring. AT&T has just gotten more specific by announcing that it's going to launch it on May 15. 

The featureset for this model makes it a mid-range smartphone, and that's the way AT&T has priced it. The HP Veer 4G is going to cost $100 with a two-year wireless service contract.

This webOS-based model is going to be for those looking for an even smaller option than the currently-available HP Pre 2, or the upcoming Pre 3. It will be about the size of a credit card, and have a 2.6-inch 320 x 400 pixel touchscreen.

This device won't include a memory card slot, but will have 8 GB of internal storage. It also won't have a 3.5mm headset jack, and will instead depend on a custom design that holds the headset on with magnets.

AT&T is calling its version the HP Veer 4G because it will support its 4G HSPA+ cellular-wireless data network. It is also going to offer Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, plus a GPS receiver, an app that will allow it to function as a mobile hotspot, and a 5 megapixel camera.

The webOS is a multi-tasking, touch-oriented operating system able to wirelessly synchronize a wide variety of data with online services like Google, Yahoo, and Facebook, as well as Microsoft Exchange. The webOS includes an on-device app store, and a growing collection of third-party software is available.
