Android OS 2.3 Upgrade Released for the HTC EVO Shift 4G

Sprint's HTC Evo Shift 4G can now be upgraded to the latest version of Google's mobile operating system. The move to Android OS 2.3 isn't as significant for this smartphone as it is for some others, though.

This is because some of the most important features in OS 2.3 (code-named Gingerbread) are already a part of the EVO Shift thanks to special customizations by HTC. This includes a set of movable bounding arrows that allow users to more easily select text.

There are a few improvements, however. Google says that this is the fastest version of its OS yet. Plus, there's a new Downloads app that will help users manage files downloaded from the browser, email or another application. In addition, the Swype text input system has been added to the upgrade for this device.

Power users who are eager to get the latest version can manually request that the upgrade be downloaded by their EVO Shift 4G. To do so, they should go to Settings > System Updates > HTC Software Update > Check Now.

Starting on Monday, June 20, Sprint will start sending messages to users of this phone that haven't already installed this upgrade, prompting them to download and install it.

Installing a system software upgrade takes less than 20 minutes, and users should carefully follow all instructions. Failing to do so can -- in the rare, worst case scenario -- result in "bricking" the device so that it has to be worked on by a professional.
