Nokia Outs Its First Windows Phone, Codename: Sea Ray

Nokia CEO Stephen Elop made pleas with the crowd to turn off all recording devices at a recent preview event, but the cameras kept on rolling and the result is the very first look at Nokia's premier Windows Phone device, which will feature the Mango update and bear the codename Sea Ray.

After just the first glimpse at this upcoming smartphone the similarities between it and the Nokia N9, a MeeGo device that the manufacturer unveiled earlier this week, were immediately apparent. The only real difference between the devices, in terms of design, is a small shutter button and different LED placement that can be found on Sea Ray. Other than these features both devices follow the same form, sport the same 8 megapixel camera, and are nearly indistinguishable.

The demonstration of Sea Ray showed it running Microsoft’s Mango, the forthcoming update to Windows Phone 7 that is expected to bring a huge collection of new features and functions. A Windows-based Nokia device has been anticipated since the two companies announced a strategic partnership earlier this year.

Nokia said this week that it expects to have its first Windows Phone on the market by the end of this year. It's going to debut in Europe and come later to the United States.
