Samsung Galaxy S II To Launch in the U.S. in August

The Galaxy S II debuted in Europe and Asia earlier this year, and U.S. residents won't have to wait much longer for the smartphone -- it will hit store shelves next month. 

Many Americans may be scratching their heads about why they should be interested -- they've never heard of the original Galaxy S. This model was released by all four of the top U.S. carriers, but under different names. T-Mobile released the Samsung Vibrant in July 2010, as did AT&T under the name Samsung Captivate. Sprint and Verizon followed suit, releasing the Samsung Epic 4G in August and the Samsung Fascinate in September, respectively.

This Android OS 2.3 powered smartphone includes a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus display with a WVGA (480 x 800) resolution and a dual-core processor. With a remarkably slim bar shape build, the Galaxy S II will be offered with 16GB or 32GB of internal storage, as well as a microSD memory card slot. 

Other specifications include an 8MPx camera with FullHD (1080p) video recording at 30fps and a 2.0MP front-facing camera. The smartphone will also feature Wi-Fi a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 3.0, an A-GPS receiver and DLNA. 

One version of the Galaxy S II will include support for Near Field Communication (NFC), a program built into Android OS 2.3 that allows users to read information off of everyday objects. 

This Samsung model will be 4.9 x 2.6 x 0.3 inches and 4.0 ounces. The smartphone will possess an accelerometer, gyroscope, proximity sensor and ambient light sensor, along with a 1650mAh battery. 

No price or exact release date has been set as of now, but it is speculated that Samsung plans to release the Galaxy S II a week before the launch of the iPhone 5, which is rumored for release any time after August.
