The national retailer Best Buy will soon begin offering an exclusive: a version of the Samsung Nexus S designed for AT&T. This Android-based smartphone has a range of high-end features, plus a large display that curves to fit the user's face.
The Nexus S doesn't have the most cutting-edge feature set available, but it is the device Google currently recommends developers use, and it gets system software updates before any other.
AT&T itself is not going to be selling a version of this handset. Instead, it will be available only from Best Buy's retail stores, Best Buy Mobile stores and BestBuy.com/Mobile.
The retailer has already begun taking pre-orders, and the launch date will be Sunday, July 24. This version of the Nexus S will cost $100 with a new, two-year wireless service plan.
Overview of the Samsung Nexus S
This smartphone debuted in December of last year as the first with Android OS 2.3 (Gingerbread), and initially was only available from T-Mobile. Sprint released its own version in May.
The Nexus S runs an unmodified version of Google's operating system on a 1GHz Samsung processor, and sports a 4-inch WVGA (800 x 480), Super AM-OLED touchscreen which curves slightly.
This smartphone also has Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1, NFC, and A-GPS, and the AT&T version will, of course, support its voice and 3G data network.
The Nexus S also has a front-facing video camera for video conferencing, a 5 megapixel rear-facing camera, 512MB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage, but no microSD memory card slot.
