Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY for Verizon Gets an Early Price Cut

After just two months on the market, the Sony Ericsson Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY has been subjected to a significant price cut by Verizon.

Originally marked at $200 when launched in May, the game-oriented smartphone now costs $100 with a two-year contract from Verizon. A drop this severe in that short a time is unusual. 

It is speculated that the sudden price reduction is a result of the upcoming AT&T release of the device, which will run on the carrier’s HSPA+ network. AT&T has yet to announce the exact release date and price of if its version of the Xperia PLAY, however. 

The first PlayStation certified mobile phone, the Xperia PLAY, is powered by Android OS 2.3 and features a 1 GHz Snapdragon processor. The device has a 5MP camera, as well as a front-facing camera, and Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless networking. The smartphone sports a 4.0-inch WVGA (480 x 854) Touchscreen and slide-out gaming controls, including a d-pad and trackpad.
