AT&T has committed to releasing system software upgrades for every Android smartphone it has released this year. This will bring OS 2.3 to five recently-introduced models as well as last-year's Samsung Captivate.
Those with the Motorola Atrix 4G can now perform an upgrade to this new version -- code-named "Gingerbread". The next model getting an upgrade will be the HTC Inspire 4G. This will be available in August.
The other 2011 models that will be getting OS 2.3 are the Samsung Infuse 4G, LG Phoenix, and Pantech Crossover. AT&T did not say when these will be released.
The Samsung Captivate, AT&T's first high-end Android-based model, will be the only one introduced last year that will get Gingerbread.
More about Android OS 2.3
There are no dramatic changes in the most recent version of Google's operating system for smartphones, but rather many small enhancements to the user interface and the apps that are bundled with Android. The on-screen keyboard is now multi-touch, for example, and the overall performance is better.
