T-Mobile G2x Gets Its Helping of Gingerbread

A version of Android OS 2.3 AKA Gingerbread has begun going out to the T-Mobile G2x. This update brings a wide range of small enhancments to this high-end smartphone.

The G2x -- a version of the LG Optimus 2X -- debuted in the spring running Google's Android OS 2.2 (Froyo), but T-Mobile quickly promised that a system software upgrade was in development. The wait for this is now over.

Gingerbread doesn't include any significant new features; it brings a range of minor improvments to the user interface and the bundled apps instead. This includes adding support for multi-touch to the on-screen keyboard, for example.

The G2x is one of the most advanced smartphones on the market, thanks to its 1GHz dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor, 4-inch WVGA (800 x 480) touchscreen, 8 megapixel rear-facing camera, 4G, and support for HDMI mirroring.  Its lack of Android OS 2.3 was one of the few cutting-edge features it was missing.

T-Mobile has begun sending G2x users notifications that they can download the Android OS 2.3 upgrade over the air (OTA). These are going out in phases though, so many will have to wait days to recieve one.

Those who don't want to wait, and have access to a Windows PC can manually download and install this upgrade from the LG website. Doing so will require installing the LG Mobile Support Tool on the desktop or laptop.
