Apple iPhone 5 Widely Expected to Launch in Early September

The unusually long wait for Apple to release its next-generation smartphone is almost over. A number of recent reports, based on insider information, have indicated that the iPhone 5 is going to launch in 4 to 6 weeks.

This year, Apple broke with its long-held practice of introducing a new phone early each summer. And the company has not yet revealed when it's next-generation model will hit store shelves. That hasn't stopped a great deal of speculation fueled by unconfirmed reports.

A number of sources have indicated recently that the launch is going to happen in early fall. The latest of these reports comes from the China Times, who says that the launch is going to come in the second week of September.

A New Design
No clear picture of the iPhone 5 has leaked out yet, and there is a great deal of contradictory evidence about its feature set. One of the more controversial areas is whether Apple will increase the size of the display. All previous smartphones from this company have had a 3.5-inch screen, but some sources have said this is going to be increased to 3.7 inches or maybe even 4 inches.

Another area that has seen hot debate is whether Apple plans to redesign the outer casing of its next handset. It has been reported that it will be thinner than its predecessor, with more curves. 

Some sources have said that this upcoming model will have an 8-megapixel camera. The iPhone 4 has a 5-megapixel camera.

It will almost certainly launch running iOS 5, a version of Apple's mobile operating system that has already been announced.
