The latest smartphone to get an upgrade to Android OS 2.3 is the Kyocera Echo. This adds some important features to this dual-screened device, such as support for pinch-to-zoom.
The new version of Google's operating system--code-named Gingerbread--includes a number of small enhancements to the user interface and bundled applications. It also includes a Downloads application, offering the user easy access to any file downloaded from the browser, email, or another app.
This upgrade also includes an updated version of the Swype text-entry system, as well as Eco Mode, a new pre-loaded app that helps the user manage the battery life on the Echo. The user can pre-set a point at which the phone will go into a low-power consumption mode. This will change various settings automatically, such as Screen Timeout, Display Brightness, Wallpaper, Auto-Sync, Haptic Feedback, and Auto-Rotate Screen so that the phone conserves power.
UPDATE: Reports are coming in that this system software update is somehow flawed, to the point where installing it will "brick" the device.
Available Now
Sprint has begun sending users of the Kyocera Echo a notice that the Android OS 2.3 upgrade is available, and giving them the option to install it immediately.
Those whop don't want to wait can manually request that it be downloaded. This is done by going to Settings > System Update > Update Android.
