Google took the wraps off the next version of the Android OS this summer, but the first devices running it won't be out for another few months. According to an unconfirmed report, launches are going to start in October.
The new version -- code-named "Ice Cream Sandwich" -- will reunite the tablet and smartphone version of Google's operating system. Tablets are running Android OS 3.2, but the latest version for handsets is OS 2.3. This is because OS 3.0 was designed specifically for large displays and won't function well on anything smaller than a 7-inch screen. This is going to change in the upcoming version, which might be called Android OS 4.0.
It's not yet clear what other changes will be included in Ice Cream Sandwich. These details will likely come to light as its release gets closer.
New Devices?
Not much is known at this point about the initial group of smartphones that will debut with Android OS 4.0. At this point, the names of most of these remain a mystery, and there have been few reports about any of these upcoming models.
The stand-out in this group may be the Google Nexus 4G, which will supposedly be the flagship device for this new OS and have a large, high-resolution display and a dual-core processor running at either 1.2GHz or 1.5GHz. It will reportedly be offered by AT&T.
