The new upgrade to Symbian Anna is now available, allowing owners of the latest Nokia phones to upgrade their devices. It includes a range of enhancements to the web browser, on-screen keyboard, and much more.
Announced back in April, Anna has been available to developers for a while. The upgrade can now be installed by the general public on the Nokia N8, C7, C6-01 and E7 handsets via the Ovi Suite. However, some operator variants may take longer to roll out the upgrade.
Anna provides users with a portrait keyboard, faster browser, split-screen view for messaging and a better mapping app. This newest version of the Symbian OS adds APIs for NFC and better security and integrates better with Microsoft Communicator Mobile, as well as supports VPNs using both IPSec and SSL.
The update will also have new icons for a more pleasing appearance. The UK, along with Sweden, Germany and Finland will be some of the countries to receive the update this week.
While Nokia’s U.S. subsidiary has stopped the sale of all Symbian devices in this country to focus entirely on handsets running Windows Phone, Nokia claims 10 Symbian smartphones will be launched in the next 12 months in other regions. The company is committed to support the platform until at least 2016.
