After years of keeping a very tight rein on which carriers could offer its smartphones, Apple is apparently opening the floodgates. An unconfirmed report indicates that T-Mobile will be the fourth U.S. carrier to offer the next iPhone.
This comes on the heels of an article in the WSJ that the iPhone 5 will also be Sprint's first smartphone from Apple. Naturally, AT&T and Verizon will be launching this product at the same time.
According to details that have leaked out of Apple, the fifth-generation iPhone is going to have a slightly larger screen than the current version, though the resolution won't change. This device will also supposedly be slimmer and include an 8MP camera. It will debut running iOS 5.
T-Mobile + iPhone
Over a million T-Mobile subscribers already use Apple smartphones that were designed for AT&T but have been "unlocked" by their owners. These don't support T-Mobile's 3G network because of frequency differences, but the version of the iPhone 5 that this carrier is allegedly going to release in October will be able to connect to this carrier's HSPA+ network.
T-Mobile is the smallest of the "Big Four" U.S. carriers, and its inability to offer Apple's very popular handset has hurt it. Still, it is in the process of being acquired by AT&T, and its subscribers will eventually be able to get an iPhone one way or another.
