Samsung Might Buy the webOS from HP

Although HP has stopped making webOS smartphones and tablets, the company hasn't completely given up on this operating system. Samsung may be interested in taking the webOS off HP's hands, and using it instead of Google's Android OS.

Although Samsung has been very successful with its Android-based handsets, Apple has also been successful in convincing judges that these devices have been infringing on its patents. That's supposedly the theory behind a possible switch to the webOS.

In addition, Google's recent announcement that it's purchasing Motorola Mobility, one of the top makers of smartphones, may be making Samsung nervous. If Google starts favoring its own subsidiary over other Android licensees, then Samsung would want another option, and the webOS could be it.

This company isn't adverse to striking out on its own in this area. It makes featurephones running the bada operating system, which it developed. Going off the beaten path by making webOS-based devices would not be a big departure.

At this point, neither HP nor Samsung has said anything official about a sale of the webOS. HP has said it has plans for this operating system, without going into details. According to a post on the company official blog, " Far from burying webOS, our goal is to ensure the platform's evolution as a robust operating system for an increasingly mobile and connected world."
