And the Code-name for Google's Next Android Version Is...

Google has assigned a sugar-coated codename to most of the versions of the Android OS, from Cupcake to Ice Cream Sandwich. Those who like to look at what's coming down the pike will be interested in the codename for the version of this operating system scheduled for next year.

The codenames have followed an alphabetical system. No one outside of Google knows the names of the first two versions, but the ones afterward are well known:

• Cupcake -- Android OS 1.5
• Donut -- Android OS 1.6
• Eclair -- Android OS 2.1
• Froyo -- Android OS 2.2
• Gingerbread -- Android OS 2.3
• Honeycomb -- Android OS 3.x
• Ice Cream Sandwich -- ?

There's no doubt that the next version will begin with J, and according to an unconfirmed report the name will be Jelly Bean. That said, this is a very preliminary report that should be taken with a grain of salt.

And as for the features of this future version, there's really no way to say. To put things in perspective, Google's CEO recently promised that the Ice Cream Sandwich version will be released in the October/November timeframe -- nevertheless, virtually all of the features of this version remain completely unknown, although its release is practically imminent. Even the official designation has still not been confirmed. It could be either Android OS 3.5 or 4.0, though evidence leans toward OS 4.0.  

What's coming in Jelly Bean is, at this point, a complete mystery. Only time will tell what it will have to offer.
