Motorola Droid RAZR Bringing a Super-Thin Design to Verizon

Motorola and Verizon have just announced the latest addition to Big Red’s 4G lineup: the slim but powerful Motorola Droid RAZR. 

The smartphone will boast a Gorilla Glass coated 4.3-inch qHD Super AMOLED display, and will pack a dual-core 1.2GHz processor. Despite the appearance of a Kevlar-wrapped Droid X — thanks to its topside hump — the execs at today’s unveiling event in NYC had had a much more advanced to show: an aluminum-accented device that's just 0.28 inches (7.1 mm) thick.

The Droid RAZR will feature an 8MP rear-facing camera, capable of 1080p HD video, 1GB RAM, 16GB of on-board storage with a microSD card slot expandable up to 32GB and a 1,800mAH battery. Motorola also included Lapdock 100 and 500 Pro compatibility in the design, making the handsert power-user friendly. 

It is going to debut running Android OS 2.3. An upgrade is likely in the offing hower, as Google is expected to take the wraps off of Android OS 4.0 tonight.

This smartphone will have Motorola' SmartActions software to manage battery life, with actions like shutting off Bluetooth when home and slowing down processor speeds while on the phone. The device will come bundled with a personal cloud feature called MotoCast, allowing video, photos, documents and music to be streamed from your laptop straight to your smartphone. For Enterprise IT departments, the RAZR will come preloaded with Citrix Receiver, Motorola Webtop and videoconferencing abilities. 

Some accessories, including two lapdocks, wireless keyboard options, HD docks and Bluetooth headsets, were also revealed at the event.

The Motorola Droid RAZR will be available for preorder on Oct. 27, though no exact release date was mentioned. Word on the street is that a global launch is slated for November. The high-end handset will cost $300 with contract.

Obviously, the name of this smartphone harks back to the RAZR, a super-slim handset that sold by the million a few years ago. This was back in the days before smartphones were mainstream products, and the original RAZR was a primitive device compared to the one unveiled today.
