The hotly-anticipated Samsung Galaxy Nexus is scheduled to drop before the end of the month, but Verizon has not announced an official launch day. Information leaking out of the carrier says that the first smartphone with Android OS 4.0 will be released just after mid-month.
This model was unveiled last month, and will sport a range of advanced features, like an extremelly high-resolution screen. The main focus, however, has been on Android OS 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) -- this will be first device of any kind running the next version of Google's mobile operating system.
A previous rumor had peged the release date for Nov. 10, but the latest unconfirmed report pushed the launch back a week, to Nov. 17. The cost will reportedly be $300 with the usual two-year wieless service contract.
Samsung Galaxy Nexus Overview
Some might consider this part smartphone and part tablet, as it will include a 4.65-inch, 1280 x 720. The Super AMOLED display will be slightly curved to fit better against the user's face during phone calls.
At the heart of the Galaxy Nexus will be a 1.2GHz dual-core processor and 1GB of RAM. This isn't the fastestst available -- some models have a 1.5GHz one.
This model is going to run Android OS 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) without an alternate user interface. The next version of Google's operating system will sport a number of changes, such as dropping the hardware buttons below the display that had been standard. These have been replaced with on-screen virtual buttons. Many of the bundled apps have been improved as well.
Verizon's version of this smartphone will support its 4G LTE service, and also have Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, and NFC. It will have a 5 megapixel rear-facing camera with 1080p video recording, as well as a 1.3 mp one on the front for video conferencing and a new feature in Android 4.0: Face Unlock.
Other carriers besides Verizon are going carry the Galaxy Nexus. This includes other U.S. carriers an well as ones in a range of countries around the world.
