Android OS 4.0 Upgrades Heading for HTC EVO 3D, HTC Amaze 4G, Many Others

HTC has revealed the first group of its smartphones that will be getting upgrades to Android OS 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich). This is made up of newer models available from several wireless carriers.

Google unveiled the next version of its mobile operating system in mid-October, but it has not yet been released. The first model running it, the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, doesn't have an official release date yet because work on OS 4.0 is still going on. This means that upgrades for current devices won't be available for some time. HTC says that its first upgrades will be out in early 2012.

On its list of devices that will definitely be getting upgrades is the HTC EVO 3D and the HTC Evo Design 4G, both from Sprint. The HTC Vivid, newly released from AT&T, will get an upgrade, as will Verizon's HTC Rezound. Two handsets from T-Mobile are also on the list: the HTC Sensation and the HTC Amaze 4G.

The company finished by saying "We're continuing to assess our product portfolio, so stay tuned for more updates on device upgrades, timing and other details about HTC and Ice Cream Sandwich."

The user interface in this upcoming version of Android brings in elements from both the previous versions for smartphones and tablets. Devices designed to run it won't have physical buttons on their front, as these have been made part of the software's user interface. Current devices getting upgrades will have both physical and on-screen Home, Back, an Menu buttons.

Many of the bundled apps have been improved in Android ICS as well, and new features have been added, such as Face Lock, which can unlock a device using a front-facing camera.
