Nokia says its first Windows Phones for the U.S. market are going to launch early next year, but so far has been light on details. The good news for this beleaguered company is at least one U.S. carrier is interested in its new lineup of smartphones: AT&T.
This news comes from Glenn Lurie, President of Emerging Devices, Resale and Partnerships for AT&T Mobility. Lurie stopped short of making any commitments, but said that there are on-going negotiations that could result in AT&T offering Nokia-branded devices in 2012.
What's on the Docket?
In October, Nokia unveiled a pair of Windows Phones for the European market. If AT&T introduces any handsets from this company, they will likely be versions of one of these two.
The Nokia Lumia 800 is going to have a tablet shape with a 3.7-inch, 800 x 480 (WVGA) AMOLED ClearBlack curved display. It is going to run Microsoft's operating system on a 1.4GHz processor with 16GB of internal storage capacity and 25GB of free SkyDrive storage for images and music.
The Nokia Lumia 710 (shown here) will offer users the same power of the Lumia 800, thanks to its 1.4GHz processor, and the same display, but the rest of its specs have been scaled back to make this a less expensive device. For example, it is going to have just 8MB of storage capacity.
A darkhorse candidate is the Nokia Lumia 900, which has yet to be announced. The details of this model are currently unknown, but it's rumored to have a larger display than Nokia's other devices running Windows Phone 7.5 (Mango).
AT&T isn't the only U.S. carrier interested in Nokia's new products. According to an earlier report, T-Mobile is supposedly going to introduce the Lumia 710 in January.
