RIM Renames its Upcoming OS ''BlackBerry 10'' after Legal Dispute

RIM has renamed its next-generation operating system "BlackBerry 10" after a New Mexico federal judge approved a request for a temporary restraining order from an Albuquerque-based software company, which claims to have already trademarked the name "BBX". 

RIM confirmed the new name for its upcoming mobile platform after the company announced the moniker at its DevCon Asia conference in Singapore. Basis International Ltd. of Albuquerque threatened legal action against RIM in October, less than a week after the BlackBerry maker announced plans for its new BBX platform for smartphones, tablets and embedded systems. 

With the new name BlackBerry 10, it appears RIM will be skipping versions 8 and 9, as its current OS is dubbed BlackBerry 7. Perhaps the company is still yearning to include X in its name for the OS, as it is also the Roman numeral for 10. 

RIM has been suffering lately due to dwindling market shares in the U.S., as well as lagging sales in the tablet market with its BlackBerry PlayBook device. The next generation OS could bring the turnaround RIM needs to replant itself in the enterprise and consumer smartphone market.
