The Samsung Galaxy Note's unusually large display has drawn attention from those who want a cross-over smartphone/tablet. A few weeks ago, AT&T promised to offer this device -- but it didn't say when or at what price. These two important pieces of information have now leaked out.
What sets this Android apart from the pack is its 5.3-inch, 1280 x 800, Super AMOLED touchscreen. That's large enough that some would consider it a tablet. On the other hand, it's small enough that others would classify it a phone. The fact that it can make voice calls and includes a stylus just muddies the waters.
Those who are eager to get their hands on this tabletphone might be happy to hear that it will reportedly launch on February 18, 3.5 weeks from today. The price AT&T is supposedly going to charge for it -- $300 with a two-year contract -- seems to indicate that AT&T thinks this is a tablet, as that's more than this carrier asks for any handset.
Samsung Galaxy Note Preview
The Galaxy Note, which actually debuted around the world last year, runs Android OS on a dual-core 1.5GHz processor with 1GB of RAM. AT&T's version will have 16GB of internal storage and a microSD memory card slot for adding more.
Unlike the current one, the U.S. version will support AT&T's new 4G LTE network. It will also have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
This Samsung device sports a rear-facing 8MP camera that can record 1080p video, as well as a 2MP front-facing camera. The stylus (and stylus slot) have already been mentioned, but not the 2500 mAH battery.
Even though it will debut running Google's Android OS 2.3 (Gingerbread), an upgrade to OS 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) is in development.
A Busy Day
According to the same unconfirmed source, AT&T plans to introduce two other Android smartphones on February 18. At this point, very little is known about the Samsung Rugby Smart, which will allegedly sell for $100 with contract, and the AT&T Fusion, which will come in at $125 on contract.
