Nokia has revealed the results of its most recent financial quarter. Although there was plenty of bad news -- the company had another quarterly loss -- it was able to brag about selling over a million Lumia Windows Phones.
This company is still going through a difficult transition as it moves from making smartphones running the Symbian OS to ones based on Microsoft's mobile operating system. That's why the company is pleased that it sold "well over" a million devices with the new OS.
According to Stephen Elop, Nokia CEO, "In October, just six months after signing an agreement with Microsoft, we introduced our first two devices based on the Windows Phones platform -- the Nokia Lumia 800 and the Nokia Lumia 710. We brought the new devices to market ahead of schedule, demonstrating that we are changing the clock speed of Nokia."
Elop's comments highlight this company's biggest issue in making the move to Windows Phone: at this time, Nokia just doesn't have many models. Previously it always had an array of Symbian-based products, but is still building up its Windows Phone offerings.
As a result, the company is experiencing lowered demand for its smartphones -- down 31% year-over-year (19.6 million units shipped last quarter vs. 28.8 mu). This resulted in a net loss of €954 billion in the October to December period. That's around $1.26 billion.
Nokia is working to build up its Windows Phone offerings. A few weeks ago, T-Mobile introduced the Lumia 710, and AT&T is scheduled to release the Lumia 900 in March. The 900 series is expected to debut in Europe in late spring.
Nokia is an important part of Microsoft's smartphone strategy. As part of this, the giant from Redmond is helping its Finnish partner out financially. It made a "quarterly platform support payment" of $250 million (€180 million). In addition, it is charging Nokia just a " minimum software royalty" for licensing the Windows Phone operating system.
