Verizon is asking $300 with contract for the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, but Amazon.com is selling Google's new flagship smartphone at one third of its usual price. This deal isn't available for everyone, though.
Wireless carriers always want to bring in new customers, so they are willing to offer discounts on phones that will lure in additional subscribers. Because they know that their current customers automatically buy their latest phone from their carrier's store, the best deals can be found at retailers that appeal to a wider audience.
For example, the online giant Amazon has the Galaxy Nexus at $100 with contract for new Verizon customers. Those who are already subscribers to this carrier will have to pay $260 with contract... still, that's a savings of $40.
That said, the rival online retailer Wirefly is offering this handset for $230 for current Verizon subscribers. This would save them an additional $30 over Amazon's special price.
Samsung Galaxy Nexus Overview
This Samsung smartphone is, at this point, the only device on the market that runs Android OS 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich). Other smartphones and tablets with this version are in the offing, however.
It has a 4.65-inch, 1280 x 720 Super AMOLED display that is slightly curved to fit against the user's face. It has been built around a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, with 1GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage. A microSD memory card slot provides additional storage capacity.
Other features of the Galaxy Nexus include 4G LTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, and NFC. It also has a 5 megapixel rear-facing camera and a 1.3 megapixel one on the front.
The Galaxy Nexus debuted in December, and at this point is still available only from Verizon.
