A report released by Juniper Research shows that more the 31 billion apps were downloaded to mobile devices in 2011. And that's just the start, as the firm products a dramatic rise in revenue the coming years.

BlackBerry Is in the Game
One of the criticisms leveled at the BlackBerry platform is that it has an insignificant share in the third-party software market. RIM’s VP for Developer Relations, Alec Saunders, claimed today that there are over six million daily downloads from the BlackBerry App World store. Saunders also claimed that the store generates 43% more downloads than the Apple App Store and is more profitable than the Android Market.
To look at the app stores in perspective, the Apple App Store leads all its rivals with over 550,000 apps. The Android Market comes in second with about 375,000 apps, BlackBerry App World follows with 60,000 apps, and Windows Phone Marketplace also has about 60,000 apps.
The Apple App Store still generates six times more revenue than the Android Market thanks to its simpler check-out process, according to a report by Distimo.
