Apple Probably Planning to Introduce iOS 5.1 Next Month

Apple introduced iOS 5 last fall along with the debut of the iPhone 4S. An unconfirmed report says the next significant update, iOS 5.1, is going to be released in four weeks.

The launch date for iOS 5.1 is reportedly going to be March 9. This fits in well with the rumors that the iPad 3 will be announced in the first week of next month. Each time Apple launches a iDevice, a new version of the iOS comes out as well in order to support the new hardware features. The company generally introduces these operating system upgrades days before the new model hits store shelves.

Developers have been receiving beta versions of version 5.1 for months now. So far, there do not appear to be any dramatically new features in this version. It's expected to bring support for the iPad 3's rumored Retina display and quad-core processor, and bring Siri to Apple's tablets. Beta versions include a taggle to turn off 3G wireless networking, which slows down the connection but saves on battery life. What else this new version will do for the iPhone is an open question, however.
