Motorola Promises Android OS 4.0 Upgrades for Select Verizon, AT&T, Sprint Smartphones

Select Motorola smartphones will be receiving an Android OS 4.0 upgrade sometime this year. Exactly when many of these will be introduced is an open question, however.

Motorola announced today that the following devices will receive the upgrade: the Droid Bionic, the Droid RAZR, the Droid RAZR MAXX, the Droid 4, the Photon 4G, the Atrix 4G, and the Electrify.

The Motorola RAZR, the international version of the Droid RAZR, will be the first handset to receive the Ice Cream Sandwich update beginning in the second quarter of 2012. The company also said that users with AT&T's Atrix 4G and Sprint's Photon 4G will see the upgrade rollout by the third quarter.

However, customers in the U.S. with the Droid 4, the Droid Bionic, the Droid RAZR, the Droid RAZR MAXX, and the Electrify will all have to wait until an unspecified later date. On Motorola’s release schedule, these devices simply have a "Further detail to follow" for their expected timing. The smartphones listed are still up in the air because Motorola has to comply with the wireless carriers for upgrades, so Motorola can’t commit to anything by itself.

As for the models that are missing from this list, Motorola says its because they have less than 1GB of RAM. This is what disqualifies the Motorola Droid X2, for example.
