Apple has purchased Chomp, a small company that provides a service to help smartphone users find apps they might be interested in. Presumably, the plan is to integrate this into the iTunes App Store.
The App Store already has "Genius", a feature to recommend apps to customers based on the software they already own, but it's very limited and has been heavily criticized by users. Chomp's technology will almost certainly make this better.
As there are now hundreds of thousands of apps for the iPhone and iPad, those trying to locate apps they would like (or separate the wheat from the chaff) face a significant challenge. As Apple makes money from every purchase made on iTunes, the company has a vested interest in making this process easier for customers.
As the acquisition of Champ has just been announced, it will clearly be some time before the company's technology is part of iTunes.
