Corning Gorilla Glass set the standard for damage-resisting cover glass when released in 2007. Today, Corning is shipping Gorilla Glass 2 to manufacturers who can then provide customers with thinner and more sophisticated protection for the displays on their devices.
The second version of Gorilla Glass enables up to a 20% reduction in cover glass thickness without sacrificing the performance consumers have been used to in the past. The thinner glass will allow smartphones and other devices to stay sleek, thin, and portable.
Since its initial launch at CES in January, Corning has qualified Gorilla Glass 2 to more than half of their current customers and has already shipped it for manufacturers looking to sell devices that will feature Gorilla Glass 2 in the first quarter of 2012.
Today, Gorilla Glass 2 is the mostly widely deployed cover glass, used by more than 30 major brands and has been designed into more than 600 product models, spanning over 600 million units worldwide. The scratch- and shatter-resistent material is on smartphones, tablets, and other consumer electronics.
