The next installment of the iPhone may not be receiving the new iPad’s A5X processor when it launches later this year.
The processing chips used in the first two iPads, the A4 and the A5, each made their way to a new iPhone shortly after. However, the A5X focuses on high-definition graphics which may not be ideal on a smartphone.
The current iPhone has a 960 x 640 display, compared with the the 2048 x 1536 screen on latest iPad. And the smartphone has only a 3.7-inch display, so it doesn't need the graphical enhancement offered by the A5X.
Apple may possibly be waiting for a more power-efficient chip like the rumored A6 processor, which is expected to have four processor cores.
A5X Processor Background
The A5X has two CPU cores that focus heavily on the improvement of multimedia on the iPad’s 9.7-inch screen. The chip has four graphic cores that allows for graphics to operate smoothly on the iPad’s higher-resolution display. It is based off of an ARM processor core that uses a 40-nanometer process.
Apple also claims that the A5X is twice as fast as the A5 processor and has 4 times the graphic performance of the NVIDIA Tegra 3, a quad-core chip that will be used in a number of Android-based smartphones and tablets.
