Tether is a new app that allows your laptop to take advantage of your iPhone's data plan, allowing people to access the Web, email, etc. on a notebook or tablet anywhere there is cellular coverage from your iPhone. This costs $30 a year, and anyone who isn't satisfied with the service within 30 days is entitled to get a full refund, no questions asked.

The developers of Tether first released version for BlackBerry in 2009. Today, Tether provides over 500,000 BlackBerry and Android users with a form of dependable Internet for their laptops and desktops.

Not surprisingly, iPhone users wanted a version of their own. Tether released an app in the App Store, but this was removed only 20 hours after it was launched. Wireless carriers charge extra for tethering service, so Apple's the removal of the app was clearly at the insistence of its carrier partners, who were trying to prevent their customers' attempts to get the service at a discount.

The newest version of this software is purely based on HTML5, and creates a completely wireless connection over AdHoc. Because Tether is based on HTML5, this removes the need to download it from the App Store and enables any iPhone or iPad to allow tethering.
