Samsung Galaxy S III Scheduled for May, but Might Be Early

The release date of the Samsung Galaxy S III is a hotly debated topic, but Samsung's chief executive in China has let the cat out of the bag. This smartphone is going to be released in May at the latest.

Kim Young-ha was speaking at Samsung Forum 2012 when he said, "In order to increase sales of the Galaxy S3 as well as the Galaxy Note which is already very popular in China, the company is considering rescheduling the rollout of the Galaxy S3 from May to April." Young-ha's statement was surprising for two reasons: this is the first time someone from this company has said the name of this highly-anticipated device in public, much less spoken so clearly about the timetable for its release.

Expecting Plenty of Features
The  Chinese Samsung exec didn't revel the details of successor to the popular Galaxy S II, but many of these have leaked out already. They start with Google Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) running on a 1.5 GHz quad-core Samsung Exynos processor. Samsung is supposedly upping the ante over this smartphone's predecessor by including a 4.7-inch 1280 x 720 Super AMOLED display.  

This model is expected to offerer 4G LTE, which means it could be headed for AT&T, Verizon, or Sprint -- or all of them. However, the previous generation wasn't introduced in the United States until last fall, so it might be some time before the upcoming version is available in this country.

A number of images of this smartphone have come to light in recent months, none of which agree with each other. This makes the one shown at right just one of a number of possibilities.
