Apple Patents Ejectable SIM Card Tray

In what seems like coincidental timing, Apple was just granted a patent for a SIM card tray.

In 2007, Apple filed for a patent on an "ejectable component assemblies that are designed to be flush with the externals surfaces of the housing of the devices, despite variations in their manufacture." Today, the iPhone makers were granted this patent.

There are no reports stating that this SIM card tray is directly related to the ongoing nano-SIM design war between Apple, RIM, Motorola, and Nokia.

Yesterday, we reported that Apple was in a heated competition with RIM, Motorola, and Nokia for a nano-SIM design that hoped to be the industry standard. Apple will only provide its nano-SIM technology free of royalties to device makers if they adopt it as an industry standard and if they offer the "same terms in accordance with the principle of reciprocity," according to Florian Mueller, FOSS Patent.
