Dell Ends Smartphone Sales in the U.S.

In a move to focus more on emerging markets and higher-margin products, Dell has announced that it has stopped selling smartphones in the U.S.

Dell has ended its Venue and Venue Pro smartphones and no replacements have been announced. The company said that it will continue to release mobile products in the U.S. later this year, but did not specify whether smartphones will be among them.

The company entered the smartphone market by introducing their Aero model and their Streak 5 tablet/smartphone hybrid. Dell discontinued the Streak 5 in mid-2011, and most recently stopped selling the Streak 7 in late 2011.

That being said, Dell continues to sell smartphones outside the U.S. It sells the Venue Pro in India, the Venue in South Korea, a Streak smartphone in Japan, and a Streak tablet in China.

According to a spokesperson speaking with PC World, Dell decided to end smartphone sales in the U.S. in order to focus more on mobile devices that can be used for both work and home. The company is also moving to higher-margin consumer products by discontinuing netbooks and putting more emphasis on its premium XPS lines of PCs.
