A lucky few can go to their local Wal-Mart store and get the iPhone 4S for about one-third off the regular price.
This giant retailer always has Apple's smartphones at a small discount: $188 instead of $200 with a two year contract. But today, reports are coming in that a few locations are taking an additional $74 off that price. This is apparently available only on the AT&T version. The iPhone 4, which Wal-Mart stores usually sell for $88, is reportedly going for $34 at these locations.
The special prices are not available on the mega-store's website. Still, there is a note on the iPhone 4S that "Store pricing may vary."
Apple generally does not allow companies to sell its smartphones at a discount, as it believes that lowers the public's perception of their value. It's an indication of Wal-Mart's strenth as the country's largest retailer that it's allowed to sell the iPhone below the standard price, even if it's only $12 less.
