Apple iPhone Receives iOS 5.1.1 Update

Update: Apple recently announced the iPhone 5, which will be the biggest and fastest version yet. Apple also announced many new features which will be included with iOS 6.

iPhone users, as well as owners of the iPod touch or iPad, received an update to iOS version 5.1.1 today, which contains a litany of bug fixes and improvements to functionality.

The release notes can be found in the screenshot at right, but to summarize, the 54.4 MB update "improves reliability" of using the high dynamic range (HDR) imaging option when users snap photos through the lock screen shortcut, as well as issues with AirPlay video playback. Other fixes include those for Safari bookmark and Reading List syncing issues, iPad problems with switching between 2G and 3G networks, and a bug where an "Unable to purchase" alert pops up after a successful purchase.

In addition, Apple has closed a number of security vulnerabilities in the Safari web browser with this new version.

Users can install iOS 5.1.1 in the classic manner, by hooking their device to a PC or Mac running iTunes. Or they can install it over-the-air directly to their smartphone or tablet, by going to Settings > General > Software Updates.
