Verizon Completely Ending Unlimited Data Plan

Verizon Wireless is planning to remove the $30 per month unlimited data plan that it still provides to 3G customers who were "grandfathered" into it. The carrier stopped offering this plan to new customers when it switched to tiered pricing plans last July, but a large number of people were still on it.

Fran Shammo, Verizon Communications CFO, said at a conference that every customer that was part of the unlimited 3G data plan will have to purchase Verizon's data-share plan that they are planning to launch in the summer.

"Everybody will be on data share," Shammo said.

The data-share plan has yet to receive a price or release date, but the company expects it to be live sometime in mid-summer. Shammo also said that he believes that a shared data plan will be extremely beneficial for families and small business because it will be more efficient.

In order to drive customers to purchase these shared data plans, Shammo said that Verizon Wireless will use 4G LTE as its main selling point, and as these customers move from 3G to LTE, they will have to be part of the data-share plan.
