Samsung Galaxy S II From T-Mobile Receives Android 4.0 Update

Not long after the European release of its successor, the Samsung Galaxy S II is finally receiving its Android Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0) update from T-Mobile.

Beginning late last night at 11 pm, T-Mobile began offering an upgrade for its Galaxy S II users so they could move to the most recent version of Google's Android operating system, version 4.0.3. The update is optional, and is only available via Kies, which means it must be installed from a desktop or laptop. It will not be distributed over-the-air (OTA).

Samsung also notes on its support page that the update to Android ICS will wipe users' homescreen layouts.

A Slow Roll-Out

Android 4.0 was released near the end of last year, but six months later is still installed on only 7% of devices running this OS -- all the others are running previous versions. Some of the reason for this is the slow pace at which device makers are introducing upgrades for their individual models, but carriers taking a long time to test each implementation is partially responsible as well.
