People testing the recently-released beta of iOS have noticed that its iTunes app does not list podcasts. This has led to speculation and rumors that Apple is creating a stand-alone app for these streamed or downloaded broadcasts.
At present, iPhone and iPad users download their podcasts through iTunes (either on their mobile device or their computer) and then play them with Apple's Music app, where they are treated something like a red-headed stepchild. This is apparently going to change with iOS 6.
Apple said nothing about this when it unveiled the next version of its smartphone and tablet operating system early this week, but the company did say there will be hundreds of changes included, but only described some of them.
According to information supposedly leaking out of Apple, a dedicated app for both downloading and playing these pre-recorded programs is in development.
Apple is scheduled to release iOS 6 this fall.
