Today is the U.S. debut of the Samsung Galaxy S III, a high-end Android smartphone is so popular that Samsung is having trouble meeting demand. It is launching as scheduled from T-Mobile, but Sprint is delaying sales.
The Galaxy S III is Samsung's new flagship handset, and the device has already garnered millions of sales in Europe. However, it appears to be something of a victim of its own success, as some customers in the U.S. are going to face delays trying to get their hands on a unit.
T-Mobile is having no problems. As expected, the carrier has just begun taking orders for this product on its web site and in some of its stores, with the 16GB version going for $280 with a two-year contract, and the 32GB one selling for $330. Both color options are available: blue than white.
A Shortage at Sprint
Sprint was originally scheduled to introduce the Galaxy S III this morning, but the company had to push back its launch. Those who pre-ordered the 16GB version should receive it soon, but the 32GB model won't begin shipping from Sprint until some time next week.
This wireless carrier was not able to say when it would get enough inventory from Samsung to begin regular sales.
Sprint is asking a bit less for its versions of the Samsung device: the 16GB model is $200 with a two-contract and the 32GB version is $250.
AT&T and Verizon: Stay Tuned
AT&T is expected to begin offering the Galaxy S III in the near future, but exactly when that will be is not yet known. Verizon isn't expected to debut its version of this popular smartphone until July. Both of these carriers are taking pre-orders now, and pricing the device the same as Sprint: $200 for the 16GB version, $250 for the 32GB.
Ads Here, There, and Everywhere
Even though demand is already huge, Samsung isn't going to rest on its laurels. It is promising "the largest and most innovative marketing and advertising campaign ever conducted in the U.S. by Samsung Mobile."
The Galaxy S III is expected to be the best-selling Android-based smartphone of the next year, just as its predecessor was the top-selling one of the previous 12 months. The advertising campaign will be part of this. and should help this handset compete against the Apple iPhone 4S.
