Chalk this one up to something we weren't expecting: in less than a week, Chinese manufacturer ZTE will debut a gaming smartphone.
ZTE has offered no prior indication that this was in its plans, so nothing is known about the device yet. But earlier today, the company sent out a tweet reading, "The countdown has begun! 6 days left until you can have one of the MOST ADVANCED GAMING SMARTPHONES in your hands!" By the sound of the tweet, not only will July 18 be the first time we're going to see the smartphone, it will also be available for purchase.
Though this is the first time we're hearing anything about a gaming smartphone from ZTE, the concept is not entirely foreign. Last year, Sony released its Xperia Play, a gaming smartphone with slide-out physical controls (d-pad, face buttons, etc.), begging the question of whether or not the ZTE handset will include similar features. Even with the benefit of physical gaming controls, ZTE's gaming smartphone will still have to contend with dedicated Mobile Gaming devices, like the Nintendo 3DS or the Playstation Vita. And judging by the way the Xperia Play fared (i.e. not well), that's no easy task.
