Apple iPod touch owners can do just about everything iPhone users can with their devices, yet without a Wi-Fi connection, the iPod is merely an mp3 player. Well that is about to change with the FreedomPop Sleeve, which allows iPod Touch owners to tap into mobile data networks.
The FreedomPop iPod Touch 4G Sleeve bypasses long-term contracts and pricey service agreements by offering users a case that adds 4G wireless coverage via Sprint's 4G LTE and WiMax networks, as well as the carrier's 3G and Clearwire network.
Furthermore, the case features a lithium polymer 1,450mAh battery, which is said to offer 6 hours of power, according to FreedomPop. The case recharges the iPod through what looks like a Mini-USB connector, which plugs into the device's docking port. Weighing in at just 0.15 pounds, the case measures 2.4-inches by 4.5-inches by 0.6-inches and is compatible with third- and fourth-generation models.
FreedomPop will give users 500MB of data per month, which, if rationed sparingly, allows iPod Touch owners mobile access to e-mail, Web browsing and the occasional phone call, without having to scramble for a Wi-Fi connection. For each friend that a user refers, she will receive an extra 10MB per month, with a maximum of 1GB of free data per month. By ?engaging in partner offers and promotions,? users can expand all the way up to 5GB of data, according to FreedomPop. Those who find themselves craving more data can purchase additional blocks for less than $10 per month per gigabyte.
The sleeve also doubles as a Wi-Fi hot spot for up to eight additional devices and sells for $100. Preorders begin today, with the case set to hit shelves in late summer.
A True 4G Connection for the iPhone
The iPod Touch isn't the first device to get 4G connectivity capabilities, as FreedomPop announced a sleeve for the iPhone 4/4S earlier this year. The case costs $100 as well, though was initially only WiMAX-equipped. However, FreedomPop has confirmed that the iPhone FreedomSleeve will also connect to the additional networks that the iPod touch iteration covers.
While no official release date has been confirmed for the FreedomPop Sleeve for iPhone, pre-orders for the case are available now.
