Samsung has sold more than 20 million units of its new flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S III, just 100 days after releasing the device in May. With record numbers, the South Korean company expects sales of this new handset to top the totals of all previous phones.
Relying on competitive pricing and broad availability, Samsung touts the phone as being its most successful smartphone to date, generating sales quicker than any of its predecessors, with the sales pace of the third-generation model ranking in six times as fast as the original Galaxy S, and three times as fast for the Galaxy S II. The company sold over 10 million units of the Galaxy S III within just the first 50 days, an impressive feat considering the carrier supply chain issues that plagued the device's Stateside release.
Sales by Region
Samsung broke down sales of the 4.8-inch device, claiming 6 million units were sold in Europe, 4.5 million in Asia, 4 million in North America, and 2.5 million in its home territory of Korea.
With a 1280 x 720 resolution Super AMOLED display and dual-core Qualcomm 1.5 GHz processor, or a quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 3 chipset for the international customers, the Galaxy S III offers cutting-edge features. Yet, it remains to be seen if Samsung's popular device will be able to keep its top spot once Apple releases the new iPhone.
Sammy played its cards right by strategically launching the Galaxy S III months before the highly-anticipated iPhone 5 rollout, giving the handset enough time to pick up traction among consumers before its biggest competitor unveiled its own offering. With Apple holding an event in less than a week, where the company is likely to announce the next-generation iPhone, Samsung may be banking on its new variety of colors to keep sales of the Galaxy S III hot. The manufacturer recently announced the availability of the device in an assortment of hues, including Amber Brown, Garnet Red, Sapphire Black and Titanium Gray.
While only time will tell if Samsung's latest handset can hold a flame to the iPhone 5, one thing is certain, the smartphone race is heating up!
