Apple doesn't disclose many of the important details on its smartphones. That's why it wasn't until after the iPhone 5 had been released that third-party testing could reveal the processor speed and RAM of this model.
The latest version of the benchmarking app Geekbench indicates that Apple's latest has a 1.3GHz dual-core processor. An earlier version of this software had indicated that the chip has a 1.0GHz clockspeed, but the developer of this software says its latest version is more accurate.
Apple has claimed that the A6 processor is twice as fast as its predecessor, and in pure clockspeed that's close to being true -- the iPhone 4S clocked in at 800MHz.
John Poole from Primate Labs, the developer of Geekbench told Engadget, ""I don't believe the A6 has any form of processor boost. In our testing, we found the 1.3GHz was constant regardless of whether one core or both cores were busy."
Geekbench, as well as iSupply's tear-down of the iPhone 5, indicates that this smartphone has 1GB of RAM. The iPhone 4S has 512MB.
Why the Secrecy?
In addition to not disclosing the processor speed and RAM of its mobile devices, Apple also keeps quiet about why it won't reveal this information. Still, some logical inferences can be made.
Months before the iPhone 5 was introduced, rival handsets like the Samsung Galaxy S III hit the market with 1.5GHz dual-core processors and 2GB of RAM. Does that automatically mean Samsung's flagship smartphone offers better performance than Apple? No, because the two run very different operating systems and apps. Apple is most likely trying to avoid drawing meaningless comparisons between them and their competitors.
