T-Mobile Has Dropped Its Cheapest Data Plan

T-Mobile has quietly stopped offering its most affordable wireless data plan. The plan, which cost just $10 month, allowed users to transfer a very small amount of data in a month.

The monthly allowance was just 200MB, only enough for ocassional web browsing and very infrequent emails. While a good fit for very light users, its cost per megabyte was actually quite high, and it always carried the potential for overage charges.

With this change, the least expensive data plan from T-Mobile is now $20 per month, which gets 2GB per month of data -- twice the cost but 10 times more data. This option does not incur overage charges -- instead, user's data-transfer rate is decreased once they pass the 2GB mark.

Those who have the REQ 200 plan do not have to switch to a more expensive plan, and they can upgrade to a new device without switching. However, this plan does not quilify them for subsidized prices on smartphones.
