Windows Phone 8 DataSense App to Give Users Access to 11 Million Wi-Fi Hotspots

One of the new features of Windows Phone 8 is DataSense, which, among other things, helps users track and cut down on data usage by compressing transmitted data. But the app will also allow users to connect to 11 million different worldwide Wi-Fi hotspots, courtesy of Devicescape.

Devicescape, which specializes in offloading cellular data traffic, has teamed up with Microsoft to give Windows Phone 8 users free access to its millions of Wi-Fi hotspots around the globe. The DataSense app, which will be coming to Verizon Wireless Windows Phone 8 devices first, will let users connect to Devicescape Wi-Fi networks instead of using up their data plans.

While the process of signing into Devicescape's networks will still need to be done manually, research is currently being conducted with the hopes that the process will one day be automated. That way, whenever Windows Phone 8 users enter a Wi-Fi hotspot, their phone will automatically begin using Wi-Fi instead of its data connection and help preserve their monthly allotment.
