Sprint Quietly Releases ZTE Flash with 12.6 Megapixel Camera

Despite rumors of the ZTE Flash that revealed just about everything this affordable 4G LTE smartphone has to offer, Sprint never acknowledged the device, until now. Even so, the carrier kept the launch of the handset rather modest, simply releasing a spec sheet rather than the usual media blitz.

As predicted, the most intriguing feature of this mid-range phone is the 12.6-megapixel rear-facing camera, with a single motion panoramic feature, a big leap in pixels compared to even signature models like the iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S III. While so many megapixels don't guarantee high image quality, it is an impressive spec for its price range. Less notable, however, is the 1-megapixel shooter in the front for video calling.

Sporting a 4.5-inch HD display, the Flash packs a respectable 1.5GHz dual-core processor and 1GB of RAM. Equipped with 8GB of internal storage, users can add more space via a microSD card, while also using the device as a 3G/4G LTE hotspot for up to eight devices.

Powered by a 1780 mAh battery and shipping with Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) under the hood, the handset is another of China-based ZTE's attempt to delve into the Western market. While ZTE is a big name company in China, selling smartphones, tablets and mobile hotspots, the manufacturer has had a difficult time translating that success to the U.S.

Yet, with ZTE Flash selling for $130 with a two-year contract and a $50 mail-in rebate from Sprint, perhaps this budget-friendly smartphone could find a following this holiday season.
