Verizon Wireless Shutting Down V Cast Video Service in Two Weeks

Less than a month after announcing the upcoming closing of its app store, Verizon Wireless is closing up shop on another service: its V Cast Video platform. This gave customers access to live sporting events, as well as television shows from networks like NBC, CBS and Comedy Central.

First launched back in 2005, V Cast Video was a pioneer offering for its time, bringing videos to mobile users on a selection of devices. Despite making its way to Android handsets in mid-2010, the platform will see its final day on Dec. 15.

Viewdini Is In

The move comes as Big Red shifts its focus to the free video service "Viewdini" to 'better serve the demands of consumers,' while bringing them 'the best video experience in wireless,' according to the company's website.

Announced back in the spring for Android users and hitting iOS-clad devices in August, Viewdini gives smartphone and tablet owners the ability to browse movies, TV shows and other videos by tapping into streaming services like Hulu Plus, Xfinity and Netflix. Those looking to get their football fix on a mobile device will have to pay $5 a month for NFL Mobile.

Current calling or data plan subscribers will not be affected by the shutdown; however, customers with the Smartphone App Pack or other bundles, which include the V Cast service, can opt to remove the feature from their account.
