Microsoft Rolling Out First OTA Windows Phone 8 Update

Microsoft has begun to roll out its first Windows Phone 8 over-the-air update, codenamed "Portico," but it's currently only available for international users.

The update is intended for HTC 8X users and is not the same as the previously-revealed "Apollo Plus" update, which will bring updates to all Windows Phone handsets. It includes a number of fixes and updates, some of which include a fix for a widely reported random reboot issue, always-connected Wi-Fi capability, and new SMS features like select all, draft saving, and call rejection.

There is no word yet on when users in the U.S. will begin to receive the OTA update (OTA updates themselves being a new feature of Windows Phone 8). Microsoft is acknowledging its existence, but is refusing to comment on when it will arrive, telling ZDNet's Mary Jo Foley, "We're working closely with our hardware and carrier partners to get it tested, approved, and rolled out."

In other update news, Nokia Windows Phone 7.x users will apparently be receiving additional updates on top of the Windows Phone 7.8 update that is already on some new phones and that Microsoft intends to roll out to existing users by early next year. According to ZDNet, some of these exclusive features include "Bluetooth Share, the Cinemagraph animation option, new camera lenses, and updated to the contacts-transfer and contacts-share capabilities."
